Users Stopping Anti-Obesity Jabs Put On Weight at a Quadrupled Rate Compared to Those on Conventional Diets
New research indicates that people who discontinue blockbuster GLP-1 drugs like Mounjaro or Wegovy may regain reduced body mass much more quickly than those who halt traditional diet and exercise regimens.
Findings released in a major health publication points out that while obese individuals frequently drop about a fifth of their body weight while using the jabs, the mass returns at an average rate of nearly a kilo each month once they quit.
"Individuals buying these drugs must be informed of the danger of fast rebound weight gain when the therapy ends," warns lead investigator Dr. Susan Jebb.
This pace of regain suggests a reversion to pre-treatment mass in about a year and a half.
Analyzing Therapies
The research, which looked at dozens of trials involving over 9,000 of participants, compared the results of the injectable medications with other pills.
The team note that individuals who shed pounds through dieting usually see a slower weight regain—perhaps 0.1 kg a month—once they finish.
Explaining the Fast Regain
Experts believe the mechanism of the jabs is key to understanding the accelerated rebound.
GLP-1 drugs copy a body's own chemical called GLP-1, which moderates hunger.
"Long-term administration of the hormone concentrations far above than normal might result in the system to generate a reduced amount of its own natural GLP-1, and may also diminish sensitivity to its actions," noted Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition expert.
"Stopping of this hormone supplement results in hunger is no longer kept in check, making excessive eating a significant risk."
An Ongoing Condition?
Health authorities advise the injections for people with obesity-related health risks, alongside prescribed diet and exercise modifications.
Many experts contend that, given the likelihood of weight regain, the treatment should be considered ongoing.
This perspective is supported by drug manufacturers, who say that the findings "highlight the long-term character of excess weight," similar to managing diseases like hypertension.
Patient Accounts
People who have stopped the medication report a powerful resurgence of cravings.
"It felt as if a switch that goes on and you're instantly ravenous," described a patient.
This difficulty is exacerbated if individuals have not developed permanent lifestyle or habit modifications during therapy.
Significant Interest
Recent estimates suggest that a significant number of adults in the UK have tried these injections in the past year, with desire continuing to grow.
- Use is more common among females compared to men.
- The 40s and 50s age group shows the greatest usage rates.
- A large proportion access the medications through private prescriptions rather than the NHS.
In conclusion, researchers caution that while GLP-1 drugs are powerful tools for weight loss, they are not a permanent cure and lasting health benefits relies on ongoing behavioural support.
