Matteo Cancellieri Displays Flashing Moments of Brilliance in Silver Lining for Struggling Lazio

The atmosphere at the Stadio Olimpico was anything but joyful on Saturday afternoon. The Biancocelesti found themselves behind against Torino, a side that had allowed ten goals while scoring only two in their last five league matches. Supporters from the Curva Nord were wrapping up their latest protest in an ongoing feud with chairman Claudio Lotito.

The Campaign Falling Apart?

Was the team's progress falling apart, or had there never been a thread holding it together to start with? They reappointed Maurizio Sarri as manager this summer, only for him admitted that the board had omitted to inform him about the transfer ban they were facing for fiscal problems. Rumours that he might quit were not true, but he did say that Lotito had "swindled" him.

Lazio appeared equally disorganized on the pitch as behind the scenes, overcoming Verona 4-0 and Genoa 3-0 but being defeated in the remaining initial five matches, featuring the derby della Capitale. From one game to the next, observers have struggled to ascertain if they're getting better or imploding.

Cancellieri's Unexpected Presence

At least one man remained positive amid the chaos. Matteo Cancellieri was not even supposed to remain with Lazio this year. He spent last season at Parma as a loanee and, early this summer, Lazio were advocating for him to stay there for another season. The signing restriction led to a change of plans. The club couldn't risk to thin their squad without replacements.

He signed originally when Sarri was last in charge, at that time a 20-year-old graduate of Verona's academy. He made 20 matches in the league for Lazio in 2022-23, the vast majority of those coming off the bench. The ex- sporting director, Igli Tare, who departed following that term, later stated Sarri of "telling everyone Cancellieri had superstar potential only to bench him consistently."

Finding His Natural Fit

Maybe Sarri was still trying to work out the exact type of his skill set. Originally described as a wide forward on arrival, Cancellieri nevertheless spent the majority of that term as an ineffective backup to Ciro Immobile as center forward. Across 63 games on loan at Empoli and Parma during recent campaigns, he scored seven times. Shoehorn
